Ivey Hayes, a Pender County artist whose warm personality and brightly colored images made him one of the Lower Cape Fear's most popular figures, died Friday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was 64.

Hayes died of a variety of ailments, including pneumonia, according to his family. He had been in the hospital since late August.

"He just got too weak," said his brother, Phillip Hayes.

"His body couldn't take it any more."

Hayes had suffered for decades from the effects of rheumatoid arthritis, which had confined him to crutches and more recently to a wheelchair. His ailments, however, did not stop him from painting.

"Not once did he stop," said Rhonda Bellamy, director of the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County.

Bellamy was the head of Wilmington's Black Arts Alliance when it presented Hayes with its "Living Legend" award in 2006.

"He was such a humble spirit," Bellamy said, "very soft-spoken and just kind."
